Clarice Mendonca

Clinical Psychologist, Neuropsychologist

About Me/Bio
I am a US-trained, doctoral-level Clinical Neuropsychologist, practicing in Dubai, UAE. My services are threefold and include assessments, psychotherapeutic interventions, and developmental support.

In psychotherapy, I use a patient-specific and culturally-sensitive integration of psychodynamic, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, attachment, and trauma-informed approaches. The support I offer in psychotherapy is both to repair current difficulties and prevent future problems, all of which is based on an understanding of the person, their circumstances, and what influences their experiences. My patients value the safe space I provide to help them reflect on their experiences and work through their problems. Through insight-building conversations, feeling through or regulating emotions, and/or identifying coping skills, my clients are able to reestablish a sense of control, capability, and connection with themselves, their values, emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. When appropriate, I also offer caregiver support alongside sessions with the patient.

For those interested in an objective and comprehensive understanding of their cognitive and psychological functioning, I provide comprehensive neuropsychological, psychoeducational, and psychological assessments. These assessments are for those who have questions about their attention, intelligence, memory, language, visual spatial functioning, executive functioning skills, psychomotor functioning, emotions, behaviors, and personality. The outcome of these assessments are useful in establishing a person’s cognitive baseline, clarifying diagnoses, and identify evidence-based and tailored interventions and strategies.

Alongside assessments and psychotherapy, I offer developmental services including consultations and review of film and entertainment projects from a psychological perspective, psychoeducation (in the form of workshops, seminars, media support), academic supervision, and clinical peer consultations, and research.

How I can help you
Through assessments, I can help you objectively identify your diagnosis (where your problems come from and what is sustaining them). The assessments I conduct also help pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses that can then be used to decide what intervention(s) would be best suited for you. For this, I first establish your “cognitive baseline” (what your brain is capable of doing) and then run tests to understand how you function (how you are able to use your resources).

In psychotherapy, I offer an evidence-based approach that is best suited to what you present with (your problems, limitations, strengths, support systems, etc.). I draw from trauma-informed, psychodynamic, and dialectical behavioral approaches. Psychotherapy with me is usually a long term commitment, though I also offer briefer courses that are more practical and skills-focused.

With children and teenagers, I work with the parents as well, both to support their own parenting needs, and so that the child experiences continued support beyond the weekly therapy hour.
Why I am specialized in this field
I completed advanced and specialized training in neuropsychology and psychodynamic psychotherapy during my doctoral program.

My training in the US helped me think and work beyond the textbook; I am able to think critically and creatively, within an objective and scientific framework to help my patients/clients in the most effective way. This, coupled with my experiences as a Dubai-born Indian expat give me the ability to work in a way that is true to the reality of everyone’s experience.

My life experiences have been such that I frequently find myself building bridges across untouched gaps. This draws me to offer support in the form of supervision, research, and development to those who are wading through relatively uncharted waters similar to my own.
What I say to people who feel nervous or have concerns about therapy/assessment
Of course! If you check that box that says “I am not a robot” then you will most likely feel some sort of not-so-comfortable feeling(s) every time you decide to give therapy /assessments a shot. I encourage my new patients to acknowledge those feelings. Especially because therapy is a collaborative therapist-patient process, being open and honest about them helps me adjust my approach to make you feel safe. I encourage my patients (and remind myself) to use that therapy/assessment-related anxiety as the guiding light so that we can discern what is needed and genuinely change.
What measures I use in assessments
Premorbid estimate/cognitive screeners, neuropsychological screeners, attention, memory, visual spatial functions, language, psychomotor functions, executive functions, personality/emotional and behavioral functioning (self-report and projective tests).

I would love to connect with you!
