ABOUT ME/BIO

I am a clinical psychologist trained at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with 25 years of clinical and therapeutic experience. My style of psychotherapy is based on psychodynamic principles and is built on a dialogue and developing a meaningful therapeutic relationship between myself and my clients.

Apart from working in South Africa, my home country, and Dubai, I lived and worked in Japan for a period of 5 years, and find the experience of working with expatriate communities extremely rewarding. I enjoy working with and developing an understanding of the unique stresses experienced outside of one's passport country, and how this impacts on individual personalities. Living abroad can raise past issues that are unexamined and unprocessed, as well as emotional loss which is part of relocating. I help individuals with some of these difficulties, which in turn builds emotional resilience and a willingness to engage with the process of living in a new place.

I have a keen interest in wellness, so work effectively with chronic medical and health issues.
I also have experience working in an oncology unit and am familiar with supporting patients and their families through the different phases of their cancer journey.

My approach: I view my clients as individuals expressing the need to be heard, held and accompanied for a while on their journey. My approach has been influenced by Existential-Humanistic philosophy, which believes that everyone has an inherent capacity for making rational decisions, achieving self-acceptance and reaching their maximum potential. Questions of meaning and purpose and our quest to answer these questions lead many to psychotherapy, and I’m always honored to be a part of someone’s journey.

HOW I CAN HELP YOU
EMDR: For individuals struggling with symptoms of chronic trauma and/or deep-seated issues that haven’t fully responded to the more conventional narrative approach, I offer support with EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). Initially designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories, EMDR has evolved into a comprehensive approach that addresses a range of psychological issues. By focusing on the way memories are stored in the brain, EMDR aims to help clients process and integrate traumatic experiences more effectively.

I also facilitate partnered dance therapy for couples looking to strengthen their connection, rebuild trust, and work through other relational difficulties.
Carl Jung, the famous psychoanalyst, believed that we need to dance with our shadow selves in order to become whole. In dance we cannot lean too heavily on verbal expression by intellectualising, talking around issues or over-focusing on the other. Bringing the focus back to oneself within the partnership has the effect of lowering these defenses and raising vulnerability. In this way, dance therapy helps us become more aware of emotional obstacles we put in the way of having our needs met over time. It shows us how to be more comfortable with our vulnerable sides, and slowly but intentionally adjust to healthier behaviours.
